Foot & ankle pain
Find a starting point for ankle sprains, painful walking and foot symptoms, including when assessment should be urgent.
Get urgent care for inability to bear weight, severe swelling or deformity after injury. A hot red foot with fever, a new wound with diabetes, or a cold or discoloured foot needs prompt medical assessment.
One area, several possible causes
Pain can arise from bone, joint, ligament, tendon, nerve or skin problems. Rolling an ankle may injure a ligament, while repeated loading may provoke a tendon or bone stress injury. Arthritis and other medical conditions can also affect the foot. The place you feel pain helps direct an assessment but does not establish the diagnosis.
Assessment of movement and function
Explain the injury mechanism, changes in walking and any swelling, numbness or previous sprains. A clinician may assess joint movement, strength, balance and footwear. Suspected fracture or another significant injury may need imaging or medical referral before rehabilitation proceeds.
What recovery may involve
A plan may combine short-term protection, appropriate support and gradual rehabilitation. Exercises can target movement, strength and balance as the injury allows. People returning to sport need to prepare for turning, landing and uneven surfaces as well as straight-line walking. Orthotics are one possible tool for selected problems, not a universal answer to foot pain.
Choose a more specific guide
Read about heel pain, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon symptoms and bone stress injuries. If symptoms do not fit a simple injury pattern, discuss medical causes with your doctor.
Make your appointment useful
Bring a brief history of the symptoms, relevant reports and your medicines list. Explain which activities matter most to you and what you have already tried. Ask what diagnosis best explains the findings, what would change that diagnosis and how you will measure progress.
Agree on what to do between appointments, how to adjust activity if symptoms change and when to review the plan. Tell your practitioner if treatment causes a new problem or progress stalls.
