WorkCover injury rehabilitation

Understand the roles, paperwork and treatment questions after a workplace injury in Victoria.

Start with the injury and its effect on your day

A work injury can change how you travel, sleep, lift, sit or complete a shift. A useful assessment connects your symptoms with the tasks that are difficult and the activities you want to regain. Describe what happened, the care you have already received and any restrictions in place.

If an injury needs urgent medical attention, seek that care first. Arranging a claim or rehabilitation appointment should not delay emergency assessment.

Who makes which decision?

Your treating practitioner assesses clinical needs and discusses care within their professional role. Your insurer or WorkSafe agent determines claim and funding decisions. Your employer, doctor and return-to-work team may also be involved in suitable duties. A clinic booking does not establish claim acceptance, treatment approval or clearance for unrestricted work.

Physiotherapy and exercise physiology have different rules

For an accepted work-related claim, WorkSafe’s physiotherapy guidance allows access without a medical referral or prior approval for initial treatment. Ongoing care still needs clinical justification and review. The physiotherapist submits an Allied Health Recovery Management Plan within the first five consultations.

WorkSafe exercise physiology requires a medical referral and prior approval. Do not assume that the same arrangements apply to every discipline, programme or item of equipment. Ask your agent about the exact service before committing to it.

Concurrent physical treatments are restricted under WorkSafe’s guidance. If you are already seeing another provider, tell both the clinic and your agent before adding or changing treatment.

Prepare the practical details

  • Have your claim number, insurer or agent, injury date and claim status ready.
  • Bring current approvals, referrals and relevant medical reports.
  • Describe normal duties and any proposed modified duties.
  • Bring a current Certificate of Capacity if you have one.
  • Identify one or two activities you most want to manage again.

The first appointment guide explains what to check with reception, including fees when a decision is pending.

Agree on a plan that can be reviewed

Discuss the purpose of exercise, activity advice or hands-on care and how the plan relates to your goals. A review should consider function and participation alongside symptoms. Ask what would lead to progression, a change in approach or another clinical opinion.

Read about rehabilitation and work demands. Treatment at the clinic does not replace an insurer-appointed occupational rehabilitation service.

Fees and care in Epping

Ask reception about the consultation fee, direct billing and any gap. WorkSafe’s payment rate and the clinic’s charge may differ. If your claim is pending, ask who pays initially and what happens if funding is declined.

Muscle Joint Bone appointments take place at 26 Childs Road, Epping. Contact the clinic to check the appropriate appointment and current arrangements.
