TAC accident rehabilitation

Prepare for rehabilitation after a transport accident, with clear questions about treatment, approvals and fees.

Medical assessment comes first

Following a serious accident, obtain medical assessment before treating the problem as a routine muscle or joint injury. Severe or worsening symptoms, new weakness or other concerning changes need prompt medical advice. Call 000 in an emergency.

Once appropriate assessment has taken place, rehabilitation may focus on movement, strength, daily activities and confidence. Bring discharge notes and any medical or surgical restrictions so the plan fits your existing care.

The injury and the claim are separate questions

A clinician can assess your rehabilitation needs. TAC decides whether a claim and proposed treatment are payable. The clinic is independent of TAC. Neither a referral nor an appointment guarantees that a service is funded.

Explain what happened, which areas were injured and how daily life has changed. Neck and back symptoms, limb injuries and recovery following surgery require different plans; one standard accident programme will not suit everyone.

Timing and approval for physiotherapy

TAC’s physiotherapy policy permits eligible treatment within the first 90 days after the accident without prior TAC approval. Treatment must relate to the accident and satisfy the scheme’s requirements. Confirm your claim details and service eligibility.

For physiotherapy beyond 90 days, the provider must seek approval before funded treatment is delivered. Approval is also required after a gap of more than six months in TAC-funded treatment. The provider uses an Allied Health Treatment and Recovery Plan to request further care.

TAC restricts concurrent physical treatment for the same injury. Ask before combining physiotherapy with osteopathy, chiropractic or exercise physiology. Other services have their own policies.

Make everyday activities part of the plan

Useful goals may involve dressing, walking, sleep, household responsibilities or returning to suitable work. Discuss what is realistic now, what can be progressed and when the plan should be reviewed. Recovery targets are review points, not guarantees.

Tell your doctor about driving difficulties and any existing driving restrictions. Completing a rehabilitation exercise or attending treatment is not medical clearance to drive.

What to check before attending

  • Claim number and accident date.
  • Current approvals and any referral or recommendation.
  • When you last received TAC-funded treatment.
  • Other practitioners treating the same injury.
  • The consultation fee, billing method and any gap.

TAC pays according to its rates, which may be lower than the clinic’s fee. Check costs before attending. See the appointment checklist for the information to bring.

Arrange a suitable starting appointment

Muscle Joint Bone’s Epping team includes physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and an exercise physiologist. Discuss your symptoms, existing advice and funding requirements with reception. There is no need to book every discipline.
