Sports physiotherapy

Explore assessment, training-load decisions and rehabilitation that prepares you for the demands of your sport.

When to seek help

An individual assessment helps establish whether this option is suitable. Tell your clinician about medical conditions, recent injuries, pregnancy and medicines before starting care.

Care matched to the activity

Sports physiotherapy applies physiotherapy assessment and rehabilitation to sporting demands. A recreational player and an elite athlete may have different schedules, but both benefit from goals that reflect the activity they want to resume. Describe training frequency, recent changes, competition demands and previous injuries.

From diagnosis to a working plan

Assessment considers the injury, movement and function, and whether medical investigation is needed. Treatment may include education, progressive exercise and selected hands-on techniques. Ask how each part of the plan contributes to a goal rather than choosing care only by a list of techniques.

Returning is a progression

Recovery for sport involves more than a pain-free walk. Depending on the activity, rehabilitation may need to prepare you for sprinting, landing, cutting, throwing, repeated efforts or contact. Strength, endurance, control and confidence all matter. Agree on milestones and how to respond to symptoms during or after a session.

Everyday sport, different demands

Running increases repeated lower-limb loading; swimming and racquet sports add repeated shoulder demands; field and court sports involve rapid changes of direction. The same exercise programme will not prepare everyone equally. Useful plans connect clinic progress with training and, where appropriate, communication with a coach.

Getting the right expertise

Ask about the practitioner’s experience with your sport and injury. A special interest in sports care is not the same as a verified specialist qualification. The practitioner directory summarises published backgrounds, and MJB can help identify an appropriate starting appointment.

Make your appointment useful

Bring a brief history of the symptoms, relevant reports and your medicines list. Explain which activities matter most to you and what you have already tried. Ask what diagnosis best explains the findings, what would change that diagnosis and how you will measure progress.

A plan you can follow

Agree on what to do between appointments, how to adjust activity if symptoms change and when to review the plan. Tell your practitioner if treatment causes a new problem or progress stalls.
