Jaw pain & TMJ

Understand jaw pain, clicking and locking, and how dental assessment and movement-based care can fit together.

When to seek help

Seek urgent care for a locked jaw that prevents eating or drinking, significant injury, new visual symptoms or severe headache. Jaw discomfort with chest pain or breathlessness needs emergency assessment: call 000.

The joint and the surrounding muscles

The temporomandibular joints sit just in front of the ears and allow the jaw to open, close and move sideways. Temporomandibular disorders can involve the joints, the muscles that move them, or both. Pain around the jaw or ear, difficulty chewing and restricted opening may occur together. A clicking sound alone does not explain the cause of pain.

What can contribute?

Jaw injury, clenching or grinding, dental problems and joint disease are possible contributors. Stress can influence clenching and the experience of pain; it is not proof that symptoms are imagined. Some people have no single identifiable trigger. Tell your clinician about dental work, morning symptoms and whether the jaw actually locks.

Assessment comes before treatment

A dentist or doctor can assess dental and medical causes. A physiotherapist with relevant experience may help assess jaw movement and muscle function. Imaging is a decision for the examining clinician, based on what it would clarify. A mouthguard should be fitted and advised by a dental professional.

Reducing irritation and restoring comfortable use

Temporarily avoiding gum chewing, very wide opening and hard-to-chew foods may reduce aggravation. Suitable gentle movement, education and relaxation strategies can form part of care. Ask for exercises matched to your findings; do not force a locked jaw open. Review persistent symptoms rather than assuming repeated manual treatment will resolve every cause.

Make your appointment useful

Bring a brief history of the symptoms, relevant reports and your medicines list. Explain which activities matter most to you and what you have already tried. Ask what diagnosis best explains the findings, what would change that diagnosis and how you will measure progress.

A plan you can follow

Agree on what to do between appointments, how to adjust activity if symptoms change and when to review the plan. Tell your practitioner if treatment causes a new problem or progress stalls.
