Understanding exercise physiology.
Clinical exercise planned around your health, ability and everyday goals.
What an exercise physiologist does
Accredited exercise physiologists use individual exercise programmes to support people with injuries, disability and ongoing health conditions. Assessment considers health history, activity tolerance and the goals the person wants to achieve.
Muscle Joint Bone describes programmes involving strength, balance, mobility, cardiovascular fitness and functional movement. Exercise selection and progression should reflect your circumstances, rather than a generic fitness template.
Who may benefit from an assessment?
Healthdirect lists people managing conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, heart or lung disease, and those needing help with mobility or rehabilitation, among those who may see an exercise physiologist. Suitability and medical coordination depend on the individual.
Bring the information that affects safe planning: current diagnoses, medicines, previous treatment, restrictions and symptoms during activity. Ask whether your GP or treating team needs to provide further advice before starting.
How it differs from a general workout
A clinical programme starts with a health assessment and a reason for each activity. Ask what the exercise is intended to improve, how its difficulty was chosen and what response the clinician wants you to monitor.
Consider a goal such as carrying groceries or managing stairs. A useful plan connects the exercises to that goal and identifies how progress will be recognised. The equipment itself is less important than whether the programme addresses your needs.
How physiotherapy and exercise physiology can work together
The professions overlap in exercise-based rehabilitation. Their roles vary with practitioner experience, your condition and the stage of care. Ask who is coordinating the plan and how information will be shared so that advice is consistent.
If more than one clinician is involved, clarify who will review symptoms, change exercise loads and communicate with your GP or surgeon. Coordinated care should give you one understandable direction.
Building a programme you can sustain
Discuss where you can exercise, available equipment, time, transport and confidence. Ask for a written programme with a starting level, frequency, progression and instructions for difficulties.
At review, bring your observations. Which activities were manageable? Which were hard to fit into your routine? A programme can then be adjusted around actual experience rather than assumptions.
